Full Professorship (W3) for Process Technology in Microsystems Engineering

(Successor of Prof. Reinecke)

in the Department of Microsystems Engineering, to be filled as soon as possible.

The primary research topics of the Process Technology Laboratory are the development of innovative methods for micro-structuring and forming metals, semiconductors and polymers, and the replication of microstructures in these materials. The methods of micro production engineering employed by the Process Technology Laboratory cover innovative ultra precision machining processes; micro-erosion; electro-chemical processes; nanoimprinting; and injection molding, with special emphasis on the development of complete process cycles.

In addition, it is intended that the Process Technology Laboratory should develop new methods of micro production engineering. Potential examples for this are glass machining at the micro and nano scales; novel additive manufacturing methods; or roll-to-roll micro production engineering and hybrid integration of miniaturized components on larger areas.

Engaging in interdisciplinary research and cooperation with other departments at the Faculty of Engineering is highly desired. The development of projects within the Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies FIT and its polymer film processing technology platform is of particular interest.

We are looking for a personality with a strong international reputation and outstanding scientific qualifications. Candidates must have demonstrated potential for obtaining extensive external funding, especially from industry contracts, and a strong interest in participating in coordinated research programs.

Prerequisites for the employment of Professors are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system, are expected.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a member of the Board of Directors at Hahn-Schickard in Freiburg. The willingness to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation with other Institutes and the University of Freiburg (Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biology) is expected.

We are looking for an internationally recognized personality characterized by outstanding academic qualifications, experience in top management and leadership of large scientific working groups and good teaching skills. Therefore several years of professional experience in a management position in industry or industry-related research are required of the applicant. She / he should be able to demonstrate successful implementation of research results into industrial applications. A proven track record in the acquisition of research projects as well as very good knowledge of German research and funding opportunities are required. Experience in research and teaching is desired in one or several of the following areas:

Applied research and development in the field of in vitro microanalysis systems, especially

  • molecular- and microbiological assays with reduced analysis time, improved sensitivity, and multianalyte capacity for Point-of-Care testing
  •  mobile and fully automated analysis systems preferentially based on centrifugal microfluidics and/or lateral flow tests for in vitro diagnostics at the Point-of-Care, bioprocess- and food analysis with focus on miniaturization, automation, system integration and fabrication technologies
  •  identification of novel application fields for microanalysis systems („Unmet Needs“)

Teaching in the field biotechnology for engineers, covering micro- and molecular biology, bioprocess technology, in-vitro diagnostics, and food analysis.

Full Professorship (W3) for Embedded Systems and Wearable Computing

in the Department of Computer Science to be filled as soon as possible.

This professorship is particularly suitable as a starting positon for high qualified early career researchers.

The successful candidate shall cover the field of Embedded Systems and Wearable Computing in research and teaching and fulfil a bridging function between the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Microsystems Engineering and the Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering.

We expect competence and experience in the area of hardware and software design for embedded systems and intelligent data analysis. Expertise in the design of wearables would be desirable. These small scale embedded systems in close connection with humans – equipped with diverse energy efficient sensors and actuators – are enabled to collect and analyze data and initiate reactions. Proof of both algorithmic conceptual design and real application is required.

The ability and willingness to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation with existing professorships of the Faculty of Engineering and the integration of present competences is expected. The professorship will play a major role in the further development of the curriculum in Embedded Systems Engineering.

The University of Freiburg and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF with a total of 290 employees cooperate in the field of compound semiconductors. The professorship is associated with the post of Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF which spans scientific-technical and entrepreneurial management as well as development of the institute within the Fraunhofer model and the overall strategy of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Main research topics of the institute are in the field of high frequency and power electronics, optoelectronics, sensors and III-V compound semiconductor technology.

In your new function you professionally represent these key areas in research and teaching and towards funding bodies and research partners. Furthermore, you strengthen the strategic cooperation between the University of Freiburg and the Fraunhofer Institute. Your cooperativeness for interdisciplinary research with other Fraunhofer Institutes and departments at the University of Freiburg is presupposed. Acceptance of the professorship is concomitant with teaching obligations as a member of the technical faculty. In research and teaching, you will represent the field of microsystem technology with a special emphasis on compound semiconductors.

You are a personality with international reputation and outstanding scientific qualifications, with long-term experience in managing and leadership of large interdisciplinary scientific research groups as well as in strategic planning, acquisition and implementation of large-scale national and international projects. In addition, you are endowed with very good teaching skills. Furthermore, you are a renowned expert in several of the following areas: III/V-compound semiconductor materials science, technology and devices, optoelectronics, millimetre-wave integrated circuits and modules, sensor technology, microsystems technology. Special emphasis is put on application-oriented research.

Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system, are expected (§ 47 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG)).

Full Professorship (W3) for Security and Privacy

(Successor of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Günter Müller)

in the Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering to be filled by April 1, 2017.

We welcome candidates with a research focus on resilient systems with an emphasis on security and privacy in network systems. Preferable, these research topics should be investigated within IT infrastructures that have a high social relevance such as power distribution systems, traffic systems, smart city or “Internet of Things”.

It is expected that the successful applicant will tightly cooperate with the members of the faculty of engineering, and will participate in the future center for sustainability and transformation and in the existing Centre for Security and Society. Further cooperation with local Fraunhofer institutes in the research fields of resilience and sustainability are welcome. The successful applicant should also play an active role in the planning and development of the Department for Sustainable Systems Engineering.

Concerning teaching, the professorship will participate in the planned bachelor and master of sustainable systems engineering as well as in the existing study programs in computer sciences and embedded systems engineering.

We are looking for an internationally recognized personality characterized by outstanding academic qualifications and good teaching skills. Experience in the areas of microsystems engineering and development of sensors and sensor systems for continuous gas detection and electrical signal processing is needed. In particular, expertise in material research, building of complex, integrated microsystems as well as in-depth knowledge about gas properties and methods of gas analysis is desired.

 

The successful candidate will also be appointed as a group or department leader at the Fraunhofer-Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM. A proven track record in management and leadership of large scientific working groups, the acquisition of research projects as well as very good knowledge of German research and funding opportunities is required. The willingness to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation with other institutes is expected.

The position entails a close collaboration with the Institut für Mikro- und Informationstechnik der Hahn- Schickard-Gesellschaft located in Villingen-Schwenningen and St. Georgen and includes the appointment as a member of the Board of Directors. The candidate should be able to demonstrate successful implementation of research results into industrial applications. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Freiburg invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W3) for Engineering of Functional Materials

at the new Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering (INaTech), to be filled as soon as possible.

The professorship is expected to focus on sustainable, resource-saving materials, for example polymer composite materials. The focus should be on material design and processing, i.e., fundamental processing technology guided by modelling and experiment. It will be advantageous to contribute projects to the Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT) with its infrastructure (roll-to-roll polymer technology, 3D visualization with tomography) and to use generative fabrication methods available at the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK). The professorship is expected to establish cooperations with the other core activities at the Faculty of Engineering. Collaborations with the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy and with the local Fraunhofer Institutes are welcome. Teaching by the professorship will contribute to the interfaculty Master of Science program Sustainable Materials and the planned curricula in the area of Sustainable Systems Engineering.

We are looking for an internationally recognized personality. Candidates should have considerable experience in networking, fund raising, in particular through industrial cooperation, and the willingness to participate in coordinated research programs This professorship is also suitable as a starting position for highly qualified early career researchers.

Prerequisites for the employment of Professors are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system, are expected.

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Freiburg invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W3) for Machine Learning

(Nachfolge Prof. Dr. Martin Riedmiller)

in the Computer Science Department to be filled as soon as possible.

The professorship should cover machine learning in research and teaching. The future professor must have an excellent scientific background in machine learning and one of the following application areas:

  • Natural language processing
  • Neural networks
  • Big data analysis
  • Deep Learning
  • Robotics
  • Computer vision
  • Machine learning in the life sciences

The appointed person should foster collaborative research with other research groups at the university. A close cooperation with the application areas of machine learning at the Faculty of Engineering and in neuroscience is very much desired. Moreover, a committed participation in the cluster of excellence BrainLinks-BrainTools is expected.

The professorship is involved in the bachelor and master programs in computer science. Courses should be open also for students of embedded systems engineering as appropriate.
